Climate Change Working Group recruits new co-lead, while saying goodbye to another

Please join us in welcoming Michelle Guraieb Casis, who takes over from Sarah Seabrook as the new co-lead of the DOSI Climate Change Working Group. She’ll be working alongside the other co-leads – Lisa Levin and Moriaki Yasuhara – to deliver this highly active Working Group’s mission.

We wish Sarah continued success in her busy career, and thank her sincerely for her years of dedicated service to DOSI!

Michelle is a biological oceanographer specialising in deep-sea benthic ecology, policy engagement, and science communication. Since 2021, she has been actively involved with DOSI’s Climate Change Working Group, contributing to webinars, policy briefs, and discussions on deep-sea climate change. Her research has focused on biodiversity patterns in deep-sea mineral-rich rocks and oxygen minimum zones, a critical issue in a warming ocean.

Michelle has also led key science-policy initiatives, including organising and speaking at a UNFCCC COP27 roundtable on deep-ocean conservation. Passionate about bridging science and policy, she is dedicated to strengthening collaboration and creating opportunities for early-career scientists. As an early-career co-lead, she aims to support the group’s mission in advancing deep-sea climate discussions while ensuring equitable representation across all career stages.
