
This is the first confirmed live observation of the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, in its natural habitat. 100 years after its first discovery, the team on Schmidt Ocean Institute‘s RV Falkor (too) captured footage of the 30-centimeter-long baby colossal squid at 600 m using their remotely operated vehicle SuBastian during an Ocean Census expedition to the South Sandwich Islands.
