We’re delighted to welcome Júlia and Sierra to the DOSI social media team. They’ll be helping share the wonders of the deep sea with audiences around the world through our Instagram platform.
We received an incredible number of outstanding applications for this voluntary role, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who offered their time and enthusiasm. Please join us in congratulating and welcoming our new team members!
Meet Júlia
Júlia is a marine scientist from Barcelona, Spain, whose curiosity about the ocean has taken her across the globe. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences from the University of Barcelona and an international master’s in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, studying and living in four countries, from Norway’s fjords to the coral reefs of French Polynesia.
Over the past two years, she has contributed to bathymetry and geophysical projects in both coastal and offshore environments. Recently, Júlia relocated to Australia, where she has begun her PhD within the Southern Ocean Persistent Organic Pollutants Program at Griffith University.
Beyond her research, Júlia loves exploring underwater and sharing the beauty and mystery of marine life with others. Through DOSI’s Instagram, she hopes to connect people with the beauty, complexity, and importance of the deep-sea, bringing its unseen depths to screens around the world.

Meet Sierra
Sierra is a marine biologist at Florida State University, completing her master’s degree in biological oceanography this fall. Originally from Arkansas, she discovered her passion for the ocean after moving to Pensacola, Florida, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the University of West Florida.
Her early research focused on sea turtle occupancy patterns around fishing piers, and she now specialises in deep-sea biology, studying seamounts and benthic communities in the Pacific. Sierra’s work aims to support the conservation of vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems, including coral and sponge habitats, and to inspire greater appreciation for these remarkable underwater landscapes.
As part of the DOSI Instagram team, Sierra hopes to use her scientific expertise to foster ocean literacy and deepen public appreciation of the deep-sea.

We would also like to take a moment to thank Laura, our very first social media volunteer, for her incredible contributions to DOSI. Over her time with us, Laura’s creativity, dedication, and enthusiasm helped shape the voice and presence of DOSI’s social media, inspiring audiences and building our online community. As she steps down from her role, we say a heartfelt goodbye and wish her all the very best in her next adventures. At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Júlia and Sierra, who will continue to build on the strong foundation Laura helped create.
Please join us in giving thanks to Laura and a warm welcome to Júlia and Sierra! We can’t wait to see how their creativity, curiosity, and scientific passion will help share the stories of the deep ocean with the world.
