Deep-Sea Round-Up

This goosefish (Sladenia shaefersi), with the common name of Schaefer’s anglerfish, has modified fins that act much like feet, allowing it to “walk” on the seafloor. Image courtesy of the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, 2019 Southeastern U.S. Deep-sea Exploration.
Two weeks worth of deep-sea content! Highlights include an interview with superstar early career researcher and DOSI Advisory Board member, Maila Guilhon, and a call for applications for a paid position with the DOSI Fisheries working group (all details at the link below). There’s a ton of new deep-sea papers, articles and publications, and a whole section dedicated to deep-sea mining, with academic and NGO publications, opportunities and announcements from the International Seabed Authority, the option to support a pause on mining with your signature and an upcoming short course. There are calls for visuals (artwork, images, videos) for the new Challenger 150 website and a survey on Ocean Resources which will feed into a report to be launched at a high level summit in Geneva later this year. Plenty of events coming up, particularly around World Ocean Day, which is now just 4 weeks away! Opportunities galore including 4 open PhD positions at the Danish Centre for Hadal Research, an Assistant Professor in Oceanography at Texas A&M University and a Research Assistant at Louisiana University in the McClain lab. And will this year finally be the year that a deep-sea scientist wins the long-standing L’Oréal-UNESCO International Award in Life and Environmental Sciences?
