DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up
Highlights from DOSI News: an interview with DOSI Advisory Board’s Se-Jong Ju (deep-sea scientist from South Korea), a part-time communications job opportunity and a reminder of next week’s Beyond Plastic webinar. And that’s before we even get to the Deep-Sea Round-Up which, we are proud to highlight, represents a busy DOSI Executive! The science-policy interface is the focus of a new paper on polycentricity and regional ocean governance with respect to the BBNJ agreement by DOSI Exec Kristina Gjerde and Siddharth Yadav, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Vanuatu to the United Nations; and also a perspective article by DOSI Exec Lisa Levin on the IPCC, whose reports, she says, are not able to flag potential vulnerabilities and risk in the deep sea, where research is lacking. And DOSI Exec Elva Escobar is co-author on a paper led by Maurice Estes Jr in Marine Policy pushing for advanced monitoring of marine life for effective conservation management.
There are some great events for the diary, including (of course) our pollution webinar, and also an IUCN World Conservation Congress special session on the deep sea with a number of DOSI AB and network members on the expert panel. Abstracts are requested for next year’s upcoming Ocean Sciences Meeting, plus there are some new funding, consulting and PhD opportunities. Enjoy!
