DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

This toadfish peeking out of its burrow was found during a dive to explore Keller Canyon, about 26 miles from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, as part of the Windows to the Deep 2018: Exploration of the Southeast U.S. Continental Margin expedition. You can see deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. A guide for sharing your own images through our network can be found here.
Welcome back! The Round-Up will be taking next week off, but there’s still plenty to share in the meantime. New papers this week cover topics like discovering marine biodiversity in the 21st century, mass falls of crustaceans, and recommendations for monitoring seafloor litter. There’s also plenty of seabed mining news this week, as it’s been a hot topic at both the International Seabed Authority and COP27.
Speaking of seabed mining, events happening next month include a trial run of a deep-sea mining simulation game. You can find more details on that (and an opportunity to participate) in this week’s Events section. Finally, make sure to scroll to the end of the Round-Up to watch the EV Nautilus crew’s epic struggle to sample a particularly uncooperative sea urchin.
