DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

23 February 2023

DOSI members pose for a photo during the resumed IGC-5 BBNJ Conference, where we’re sharing the community’s knowledge with negotiators. If you’re in New York, make sure to look for our badges and say hello! Deep-sea photos shared through DOSI can be found on our Flickr page. You can share your own amazing images through the round-up here.

This week’s round-up features new research on community succession on seamounts, the value of rock outcrops to abyssal benthic diversity, and the impact of iron enrichment in the deep ocean. There are also new opportunities to apply for, including postdocs with the Indonesian Research Center for the Deep Sea and an Assistant Professorship at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Our Minerals Working Group is launching a new initiative called “A Deep-Sea Mining Expert Near You.” COBRA will also be hosting a webinar on deep-sea mining in March featuring experts Diva Amon and Hannah Lily, so make sure to register!

Finally, read to the end for a podcast interviewing marine scientist Sheena Talma on her experiences in deep-ocean exploration.
