DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

While exploring a ridge north of the Manihiki Plateau near Jarvis Island in the U.S. Pacific Islands, an expedition team of NOAA and partners encountered a deep-sea coral forest at a depth of about 2,240 meters. Several vibrantly colored animals found during the expedition are shown in this image, including an Anthomastus mushroom coral (center), precious pink coral (right), bamboo coral (left), and feather stars (center). We’re sharing this image to help celebrate the launch of a revamped website for NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program. Learn more in this week’s news section!
This week’s Round-Up features several new papers that offer crucial information for ocean management. There are articles on identifying key knowledge gaps, warming-induced species shifts, differences in abyssal plain communities, and even a blueprint for policy-relevant ocean research. This issue is also a big one for jobs, with six brand new ocean openings hitting the market. Finally, we conclude this week’s Round-Up with a chance to admire some neat oarfish art. Enjoy!
