DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

This jewel squid, glowing impressively under UV light, was collected near St. Helena between 300 and 1000 meters. It was sampled during an October-December expedition of RRS Discovery as part of the Blue Belt Programme, in coordination with Challenger 150. More fascinating pictures from the cruise can be found on Twitter under the hashtag #DY159. Image credit: Chris Fletcher, Natural History Museum. You can see this and more deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. A guide for sharing your own images through our network can be found here.
It’s a big week for the deep ocean. Our attention is pivoting toward Biodiversity COP15 in Montreal as it starts this week, so much of today’s news focuses on ocean biodiversity policy. There’s also a review of area-based management tools for deep-sea mining, an upcoming OCTO webinar, and a call for ship time proposals for the 2023-2024 Antarctic research cruise season.
Submissions are also now open for Deep-Sea Life Issue 20, so make sure to share your deep-ocean news and other submissions by January 13th!
