DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

1 September 2022

This trachymedusae was imaged swimming just above the seafloor along the west wall of Mona Canyon near Puerto Rico. Image courtesy of NOAA Ocean Exploration, Océano Profundo 2015: Exploring Puerto Rico’s Seamounts, Trenches, and Troughs expedition. You can see other deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. A guide for sharing your own images through our network can be found here.

Publications are swimming in new deep-sea research this week: Today’s Round-Up features ten articles “hot off the press,” and that’s just scratching the surface. A series of articles on deep-sea mining in The New York Times is also attracting attention, including one that cites a comment from our Minerals Working Group. Meanwhile, other deep-sea news updates cover the upcoming Maldives expedition, the recent meeting on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, and a celebration of the wonderfully weird barreleye fish.

Opportunities this week include research positions with Ifremer, the National Oceanography Centre of the UK, and the University of Vienna. Those with interesting photos featuring oceanic climate change are also being invited to participate in a contest that ends on September 14th.

Finally, if your shelf is looking a little bare, make sure to scroll to the end for a guide on how to crochet your very own “gummy squirrel” deep-sea cucumber.
