DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

This goosefish (a type of anglerfish, not to be confused with the tasselled wobbegong) was spotted during dive 08 of the third Voyage to the Ridge expedition. Image courtesy of NOAA Ocean Exploration, Voyage to the Ridge 2022. You can find more deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. Sometimes it can feel like the ocean is eternal, untouched by time. As our featured papers this week show, however, change happens even in the deep. One new article shows that past warming contributed to decreasing size in mesopelagic fish. Another paper discusses how cod populations are moving as the ocean warms, while a third investigates how symbionts helped invertebrates adapt to deep sea habitats.

Other key news this week includes a revealing study of deep-sea squat lobsters, the furthest-north sighting of “dreamer holothurians” on record, and recent highlights of the Challenger 150 programme. Finally, make sure to scroll to the end of the Round-Up to watch newly released footage of the bigfin squid.
