DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

25 August 2022

This shrimp, which measured nearly 10 centimeters in length, was observed on coral rubble about 100 miles off the coast of Florida, at a site within the Stetson-Miami Terrace Deep Water Coral Habitat Area of Particular Concern. Image courtesy of NOAA Ocean Exploration, Windows to the Deep 2019 expedition. You can see other deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. The Deep-Sea Round-Up is back, and this issue features two weeks’ worth of fascinating new research. Papers this week cover topics including low-cost ocean exploration, ecosystem modeling, and a reflection on the path one scientist took to her deep-ocean career. There’s plenty to read about deep-sea mining, too: Recent ISA meetings have led to new articles featuring experts like Pradeep A. Singh, along with papers on sediment plumes and life in potential mining zones.

One especially exciting news item this week is that CRITTERBASE, an online tool to manage data on ocean organisms, is now online. Our Events section features an upcoming livestream of an underwater volcano, while the Opportunities section shares two postdoc openings and an important position with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Finally, make sure to scroll to the end for an episode of EV Nautilus’s “Beyond the Wow” series covering seafloor mapping.
