DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up
With the 4th round of negotiations on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction right around the corner, this week is an exciting one for deep-sea science. DOSI’s Deep-Sea Round-Up begins today with two new policy briefs on ocean alkalinity enhancement and traceability of marine genetic resources. We then launch into exciting new articles on topics including the “Abyssal Voyage of the Argonauts” and responses to climate change by deep demersal fish.
One of the biggest stories this week is a new paper by over 30 authors on the large scientific gaps remaining for effective environmental management of deep-seabed mining. Then, in the news section, we check up on the depressurized blobfish specimen that caused such a stir on the internet several years ago.
Our list of events includes the “I Live by the Sea” art contest, educational webinars, and the 2022 expedition schedule of E/V Nautilus. In the Opportunities section, make sure to check new offerings including two deep-sea PhDs and a tenured professorship.
Finally, we end this week’s issue with a relaxing deep-sea video from MBARI. Give it a watch if you need to destress; it’s extremely effective.
