DOSI Deep-Sea Round-Up

These Northern Shortfin Squid were seen feeding on a large swarm of crustaceans (probably northern krill) during the Deep Connections 2019 expedition. You can read more about this amazing scene in the mission log “The Lobster Dinner.” Image courtesy of NOAA Ocean Exploration. You can see more deep-sea images shared through DOSI on our Flickr Page. Welcome back! There’s a lot on the horizon in this week’s Deep-Sea Round-Up. We begin with an invitation to connect for all deep-ocean experts headed to COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh this November. And while it may be looming large in all our minds, that’s not the only important upcoming event: We also feature invitations to Ocean Best Practices Workshop VI, the launch of the 2022 Global Deep-Sea Capacity Assessment, and more.
New research this week focuses on topics like electric hydrothermal vents, fracture zone megafauna, and public participation in seabed mining. Key opportunities include at least 15 positions with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), and our Wanted section features three Special Issues seeking articles on deep-sea topics. Finally, read to the end for a CBS Mornings interview with “Deepsea” Dawn Wright, who recently became the first Black person to dive to the bottom of the Challenger Deep.
