Deep-Sea Heroes 2020
In the latest edition of ECO Magazine 2020, a special issue on the deep sea, the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI), alongside DOSI co-founder Dr Maria Baker and DOSI Minerals working group co-lead Dr Diva Amon, were chosen as Deep-Sea Heroes 2020 in the Humans in the Deep category.
The Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) is a global network of experts which seeks to integrate science, social science, technology, policy, law and economics to advise on ecosystem-based management of resource use in the deep ocean. Through 10 working groups focussed on specific topics from climate change and deep-sea mining to fisheries and pollution, DOSI works across sectors to assimilate the leading science and aid decision-making relating to deep ocean governance both within and beyond national jurisdiction.
Over the last two decades, Dr Maria Baker has inspired and galvanised a truly global and transdisciplinary community to come together and represent the deep sea in national and international policy forums. Under her guidance, critical work has been done to ensure that gaps in our scientific understanding of the deep sea and the unique ecosystems it hosts are recognised and addressed, and that the central role of the deep sea in maintaining a healthy planet is conveyed to policy makers and the broader ocean community.
Under Maria’s guidance, DOSI has rapidly grown into a network of over 1700 deep-sea multidisciplinary experts from more than 80 countries around the world, with disciplines ranging from science, policy and law, to education, technology and innovation. It is rare for an organisation to demonstrate such a breadth of expertise and capabilities, leveraging both local and global knowledge to operate with impact at the science-policy interface.
Dr Diva Amon is a deep-sea biologist and rising star working at the nexus of science, policy and communication. She co-leads the DOSI Minerals working group, which seeks to provide expert opinion on deep-seabed mining related concerns through written responses, policy briefs, publications, side-events, interventions, workshops and symposia. Diva is also a Pew Bartarelli Ocean Ambassador and has recently been named a 2020 National Geographic Emerging Explorer.
