The Ocean Decade and the new Agreement for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) opportunities to support ratification and implementation

Plenary Session 1: Science and Solutions for a Clean, Healthy and Resilient Ocean and Parallel Session: Challenge 2 Protect and Restore Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Session 1- Science and Solutions for a Clean, Health and Resilient Ocean will focus on Challenges 1, 2 and 5 – Marine Pollution, Ecosystems and Ocean-Climate Nexus. Following, the Challenge 2 Parallel session (16:30-18:00 CET) will be hosted in two break-out rooms, focusing on Challenge 2. These discussions will focus on a deeper exploration of Challenge 2 featuring a diverse panel of experts, including scientists, policymakers, and societal stakeholders. This discussion will draw from the insights shared in the plenary but also into the more specialized findings presented in the WPs.

Deepening the Decade: Deep Ocean Actions for a Sustainable Ocean
This satellite event will highlight a set of communal goals for the deep ocean developed by the Decade’s Deep Ocean Research and Management Community of Practice (approximately 18 decade programs, projects and centers) at a recent Deep Ocean Solutions Accelerator workshop. The event will consist of two panel discussions, focused on the following broad themes emerging from the Deepening the Decade ‘cohesive asks’ white paper:
- Deep ocean health, wealth, and the role of biodiversity
- Progressing deep ocean observing for the next generation
