Deep-Sea Round-Up

Can you believe it’s nearly June, which means World Ocean Day is almost upon us! Where has 2021 gone? In this week’s Deep-Sea Round-Up, we share the news that we will be premiering the global, virtual performance of Song of the Ocean at 1pm UTC on Tuesday 8th June. We will soon be sharing the YouTube link where you can watch it (and listen of course!). A article led by REV Ocean’s Alex Rogers, and co-authored by a number of DOSI members, addresses the issue of marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction – alongside an overview of the subject, expect a practical approach to the equitable sharing of MGR and associated benefits, as well as a look at the gaps in infrastructure and shared resources that will be required to achieve this. The deep sponges of the Azores get some attention, as does the role of marine vertebrates in the ocean carbon cycle. While a new study revealing high hadal mercury concentrations grabs a couple of headlines. Of course, next week is dominated by World Ocean Day events and we’ve included some of those highlights, relevant to the deep sea.
